Marcus Frey: Due to my background, I am excellently trained in visual thinking. In addition, my interest in business topics, group processes and current social change plays very well into my work as a live event visual practitioner. My drawn documentaries often have a nice sense of humor, implemented with lovely and alive characters. I make sure to have an even distribution of male and female characters – and in my work, drawn women actually look (and move) like women. I’m certain that this careful approach to image depiction makes the themes and key messages work harder for the viewer, more accessible, and longer remembered. My experience is based, among other things, on my work as managing director of the Illustratoren Organisation e.V. (2009-2012) and on my time as a lecturer for graphic recording at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg (2012/2013).
For me, visualization is the essential basis for communication: in the beginning, I am sure, there was the image. It is often forgotten that our writing originated on the basis of simple pictograms. So not only words and facts are essential, but also the images that precede our words. But before images comes attention – the ability to perceive who and what we encounter. Graphic Recording is nothing less than the technique of returning to the original meaning of communication: we do not communicate for ourselves, but to better understand our counterpart.
